疑問の元となった文章について。
事の発端は、ある文章にネイティブから添削を受けましたが、その理由が不明でした。
How
do you think that ifwould you compare the current computer with/to the previous computers?Did you
enterstart with a new company? Howdo you think that ifwould you compare it with/to the previous company?Oh, did you go to a Meetup? How
do you think that ifwould you compare it with/to an English club?
ということで、 How do you think that if は全部× で How would you にしろと添削されてしまいました。

じゃないかと。
そして彼女は言ってました。
It just doesn’t make sense to include “if you compare” as part of the indirect speech.
if you compareが間接話法として、含まれるのは、おかしいのです。
と。
今回の質問
なるほど、だとすると、私がそもそもthat ifを使い始める前に確認したこの文章はなんだったの？
と言うものです。
この例文は例外なの？
これは、私が作ったわけでもなく、例文としてネットにありましたので、それを参考にthat ifいけるな！と思ったわけです。

仮定法
She said that if she had enough money, she could buy a new dress.（もしもお金がたくさんあれば新しいドレスが買えるのに、と彼女は言った。）

このサイトには仮定法としての説明で書いてあります。
仮定法だからOKなのか？と聞いてみた
そこで、質問してみました。
仮定法だったら、that if 行けるのか？と。
通常のもし〜という条件文のif じゃなくて、仮定法としてif だったら行けるのでは？と。
で仮定法なら大丈夫なのか？と聞いて見ました。
すると、詳細に帰ってきました。
簡単に言うと独立文が必要
読むのが面倒な人に簡潔に先に言うと
とのこと。

Sorry, I didn’t really explain it well! It is okay to have an “if-clause” within indirect speech. The problem with your example sentence is that it did not have an independent clause.
ごめん、うまく説明できてなかった。if節は間接話法でも使えます。問題だったのは独立節がなかったことなのです。
“How do you think that” – Adverbial phrase (dependent)
“If you compare with the previous company” – Conditional clause (dependent)“How do you think that” ← 副詞句 (従属節)
“If you compare with the previous company”← 条件節 (従属節)By “dependent” I mean that neither of these is a complete sentence by itself. Two dependent clauses put together cannot make a complete sentence.
従属節はどちらも、それ自身で文章を完了できません。２つの従属節を２つ繋げたものは、文章を完了させません。
In my version I changed the clause to be independent:
私の作った文章は、節を独立節に変えました。
“How do you think that” – Adverbial phrase (dependent)
“It compares to the previous company” – Independent clause –> This is a complete sentence with the subject “it” and verb “compares.”“How do you think that” ← 副詞句 (従属節)
“It compares to the previous company” ← 独立節 –> これは、主語itと動詞comparesが使われており、完了した文章です。(Technically “to/with the previous company” is a separate, dependent prepositional phrase but I am calling it all one phrase to simplify.)
細かく言うと”to/with the previous company”の部分は、分かれている、従属前置詞句？なのですが、話をわかりやすくするために、一つの句としました。
Or:
“If you compare this with the previous company” – Conditional clause (dependent)
“How do you think that” – Adverbial phrase (dependent)
“It compares” – Independent clause / complete sentenceもしくは
“If you compare this with the previous company” ← 条件句 (従属節)
“How do you think that” ← 副詞句 (従属節)
“It compares” ← 独立句 / 完了した文章That’s why this example also works:
“She said that” – Adverbial phrase (dependent)
“If she had enough money” – Conditional clause (dependent)
“She could buy a new dress” – Independent clause / complete sentenceなので、この例文も大丈夫なんです。
“She said that” ← 副詞句 (従属節)
“If she had enough money”← 条件句 (従属節)
“She could buy a new dress”← 独立句 / 完了した文章It is possible in your first example to put an “if” clause within the indirect speech, as long as there is also an independent clause (the result of the condition). Like, “How do you think that the company looks if you compare it to the previous company?”
あなたの最初の例文も、if句が間接話法として置かれても大丈夫なのです。ただし、独立句がなきゃだめですが。
例えば、”How do you think that the company looks if you compare it to the previous company?”みたいに。“How do you think that” – Adverbial phrase (dependent)
“The company looks” – Independent clause / complete sentence
“If you compare it to the previous company” – Conditional clause (dependent)“How do you think that”← 副詞句 (従属節)
“The company looks”← 独立句 / 完了した文章
“If you compare it to the previous company”← 条件句 (従属節)It still does not sound right to put the “if-clause” at the beginning of the indirect speech, though. Maybe it’s grammatically okay, but it’s too complicated to understand.
if句を間接話法の最初に置くのは、やっぱり変な感じに聞こえますが、だけども、多分、文法的にはOKです。でも、理解するのにややこしいくなると思います。
とまあ、長文いただきまして、誠にありがたい限りでした。
めちゃめちゃわかりやすい
なるほど、めちゃめちゃ納得です。
やはり、that ifは単純にダメだ！と言われるのと、何がダメかを言われるのとでは、この後の英語を使って行く上で全然違うと思いまして、聞いてよかったなと思いました。
理由があれば自分で応用できる
このルールを守れば、私は 間接話法 でもif を使っていいんだと思えるし、理解が足りなかったのは、こうした条件文の時の、independent clauseやdependent clauseに対する理解なんだ！とはっきりしました。
